What's the Difference Between a Head Coach, Assistant Coach, and Team Manager on Team Ontario?

All Team Ontario coach and manager positions for NAIG 2028 are volunteer roles.

Team Ontario is overseen by Indigenous Sport & Wellness Ontario (ISWO), the recognized Province/Territorial Aboriginal Sport Body (P/TASB) for Ontario. At NAIG 2028 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Team Ontario will include about 400 athletes, 80 coaches, and 20 mission staff. Coaches and managers work with ISWO staff, the Chef de Mission, and Sport Managers to make sure every athlete has a safe, supported, and positive Games experience.

Head Coach

  • Leads the coaching staff for their sport team
  • Builds a detailed plan for try-outs and team development with ISWO and the coaching staff
  • Selects athletes in consultation with Sport Managers and ISWO
  • Works with Provincial Sport Organizations (PSOs) on province-wide talent identification, evaluations, team development and camps

Assistant Coach

  • Supports the Head Coach with training, athlete monitoring, and team development
  • Helps with try-outs, qualifying events, camps, and athlete registrations
  • Provides mentorship and supervision for athletes at the Games

Manager

  • Oversees team logistics, schedules, equipment, paperwork, travel coordination, and communication with mission staff.

What every coach and manager does

  • Pre-Games: helps with athlete identification, qualifying events, camps, registrations and sport-specific conference calls, and provides ongoing athlete training and monitoring from selection through competition
  • Games-time: mentors and supervises/chaperones athletes, and supports or directs the designated caring adults in place for athletes during competition
  • Post-Games: submits a written evaluation of team operations, coaching staff duties and the overall event

Everyone must follow the policies, code of conduct, rules and guidelines set by ISWO, the NAIG Council and the 2028 Host Society.
