What are the Aboriginal Coaching Modules?

The module is open to all coaches, regardless of their background, who are committed to fostering inclusive and respectful sports environments for Indigenous athletes.

The Aboriginal Coaching Module (ACM) is a professional development training tool designed for coaches working with Indigenous athletes. This program complements the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) and aims to provide coaches with the knowledge and skills to better support Indigenous athletes in their athletic and personal development.

Background
The ACM was developed by the Aboriginal Sport Circle (ASC) after years of consultation with Indigenous communities, coaches, and stakeholders. The goal was to create a program that not only educates Indigenous coaches but also encourages their participation in the NCCP. Launched in 2003, the ACM curriculum reflects the unique aspects of Indigenous culture, values, and lifestyles, ensuring that it resonates with the communities it serves.

Key Objectives
The ACM focuses on three primary objectives:
  1. Cultural Awareness: Educating coaches about Indigenous culture, traditions, and values to foster a deeper understanding and respect for the athletes they work with.
  2. Holistic Development: Supporting the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being of Indigenous athletes.
  3. Community Engagement: Encouraging Indigenous participation in coaching and sport leadership roles, ultimately strengthening community involvement in sports.

Curriculum Highlights
The ACM curriculum is structured to address the specific needs of Indigenous athletes and coaches. Key topics include:
  • The history and impact of colonization on Indigenous peoples and its relevance to sports.
  • Strategies for creating inclusive and culturally sensitive coaching environments.
  • Tools for effective communication and relationship-building with Indigenous athletes and their communities.
  • The importance of traditional Indigenous values and how they can be integrated into modern coaching practices.

Why the ACM Matters

The ACM is more than just a training program—it's a step toward reconciliation and empowerment through sports. By equipping coaches with the tools to understand and respect Indigenous perspectives, the ACM helps create a supportive environment where Indigenous athletes can thrive. It also encourages more Indigenous individuals to take on coaching roles, fostering representation and leadership within the sports community.

How to Get Involved
Coaches interested in the ACM can access the program through the Aboriginal Sport Circle or their provincial/territorial sport organizations. The module is open to all coaches, regardless of their background, who are committed to fostering inclusive and respectful sports environments for Indigenous athletes.
